I disappointed some people I loved in my choice of profession, as “actor” was never one of the options, but my father, a college professor, once played the “”Sewer Man” in “The Mad Woman of Chaillot”, and I much later learned that my mother acted in some things at the State Normal School (teacher’s college), so maybe some of the longing was inbred, but here I am, and I am very grateful that when I got to the Barter Theater as an apprentice in 1960, I felt that I was finally at home, and kept that feeling for 60 years. I once read an English director’s description of a good actor: “Big Heart, Big Mouth, Strong, Needle Sharp Mind”, an ideal which stirred me, and I hope I’ve lived up to that as much as possible.
