I once was privileged to work with James Mason, and he was so completely effortless and real, that he truly WAS the person he was playing, even with all the tech people and cameras and lights, and I so wish that I could have captured that ease, which I deeply respect. I do hope that all actors realize that this is a separate skill, more technical, and more precise, but requiring a realness that is often obliterated by worrying about the damned lines, which are often changed at the last minute. So I salute all those who have become comfortable with film and TV. It’s very hard work, and you have a gift to cherish.

OCEAN SPRAY CRANBERRY COMMERCIALS

Q: Are the men in the Ocean Spray commercials real farmers? —Ben J., Iuka, Miss.
A: No; Henry Strozier … and Justin Hagan … are actors who were cast over hundreds of others. The ads, which have been on the air since 2005, are shot in a working cranberry bog in Carver, Mass.
